Who is “Bro. Matt”?

bro-matts-photo-2.jpgWelcome to Bro. Matt’s Blog! My name is Matthew Perry, and “Bro. Matt” is what my church family calls me — a name I cherish.

This blog originated as a way simply to write down my thoughts on various issues in the Scriptures and in culture in a cogent and coherent way. Then it evolved into a blog that many of the members of Boone’s Creek Baptist Church where I serve as pastor began to read. Now, it is gaining a wider readership — which is always to the praise and glory of God.

Each of my blog entries, I pray, is posted with a pastor’s heart desiring to help spread the glory of God, strengthen the church, and to spread the Gospel to a lost and dying world.

A Little About Me

I am 36 years old, a sinner saved by God’s sovereign grace in Christ Jesus back in 1982 in Rustburg, VA. I’m a husband of ten years with four incredible children. I’m the pastor of the Boone’s Creek Baptist Church in Lexington, KY, serve as Director of Seminary Extension Studies with the Boone’s Creek Baptist Association and I’m a Doctor of Ministry student at Southern Seminary. Here is what I believe (with a format a la Challies.com):

    Follower of Christ: I acknowledge that Jesus Christ is my only Savior and Lord.
    Protestant: I hold to salvation by grace alone (sola gratia) through faith alone (sola fide) in Christ alone (solo Christo) as outlined in Scripture alone (sola Scriptura) to the glory of God alone (Soli Deo gloria). (For more info about this doctrine, please log on to an article/sermon of mine called “Reformation Then… Reformation Now.”)

    Reformed: I hold to the sovereignty of God in all things. I hold to the doctrines of grace, though some know this as Calvinism. I prefer the term “sovereigntist.”

    Evangelical: I hold that the Gospel is what God has revealed in the Scriptures to transform hearts to His Son, Jesus Christ. The world Gospel comes from the Greek word euangelion, which is where we get the word “evangelism” and its derivitives.

    Southern Baptist: I belong to the Southern Baptist Convention.
